While working on this project one rainy Sunday afternoon, my ten-year old asks, "Dad, are you doing a greatest hits album?" I had to explain that I didn't have nearly enough the catalog - or demand - for that sort of thing. But it's awesome when your kids think you're worthy of it anyway.
This album is comprised of songs I've written and recorded over the years, specifically for retreats and conferences I've led music for. It's not always easy writing in a select pocket of theme and scripture; the never-ending search for that killer hook or words for the last stanza. But in the end, when you're standing in front of 300 or 600 or 1000 folks, and you step away from the mic and they keep singing, that's when you know that the song has become as much theirs at it is yours.
Maybe these songs will take you back to a retreat or conference I had the pleasure of leading music for, or maybe they'll lead you to form new experiences and memories. Either way, I hope you enjoy them. After all, they were written for you.
For over 20 years, Steve has enjoyed keynoting and leading music for a wide diversity of church retreats and conferences.
As music leader, Steve strikes a comfortable and consistent balance that encourages participation without becoming “performance.” He not only draws from the best of what’s typically called “praise music,” but has been known to incorporate, on occasion, a Coldplay or Mumford & Sons tune. Steve's repertoire follows a very simple mantra:
- Melodies that are singable,
- Theology that is reformed,
- Lyrics that are inclusive,
- Music that brings people together.
And no “Jesus-is-my-boyfriend” songs.
As a keynoter, Steve's messages are always less preachy and more conversational; drawing from a deep Biblical and theological well while utilizing contemporary images and creative tools. His keynotes are tailor-made to the age of the group he's speaking to - children, youth, adults, or all of the above.
