about
It was noontime one hot summer day and I was at my music space, my home away from home during the sabbatical. I had my guitar in hand and was splayed out on the couch. I had this emotion inside me, a strong musical one, and wanted very much to put it into the guitar I was holding. I slapped the capo on the 5th fret and started strumming a G in 6/8 time. And that’s basically how "Where There’s Love" came to be.
In the studio Doug suggested adding an “Into the Mystic” feel with some strings. Always looking for an excuse to work with strings, I readily agreed. We snagged a trio of folks from the local symphony, and Doug composed a ridiculously beautiful arrangement. I really don’t believe there’s a single note out of place with those strings.
I had wondered for a while what this tune was about – funny, sometimes, how you don’t really know as you're writing the song. I think that’s kind of cool, actually. I eventually understood that the song is about and for my wife.
lyrics
I've been down this road before
I know every twist and turn
How to live it up and live out loud
How to keep from getting burned
I've made a shell around to surround me
Protect my insides
Cause I don't really like it when others see
The truth behind the lies
Is there any light in this darkness
Illuminate the pain
Where there's salvation
Where there's love, where there's love
Where there's love, oh the love
It was all I could hope for
It was all that I'd need
Someone else to walk and talk with me
Bring an end to my lonely misery
You were there when the night fell
You were there at first light
And now I know when I hear the sound of your tears
That everything's gonna be alright
It's not that the road isn't hard anymore
There are burdens still to bear
But I don't go it alone
Where there's love....
So stay with me and see us both through
Cause no one else can show the way like you do
They say that grace is like coming back home
And the roads lead us there
All the journeys, all my trials, I know it's true
Where there's love....
