This was the first song out of the gate during my 2010 summer sabbatical. I think I was prepping for a gig somewhere, loosening up the strings and vocal chords, and on a whim tuned the two E strings down to a D and played a standard C chord – two things I rarely do. The chord progression for the song’s intro and verses came naturally, as did the song itself. The only hangup was the transition into the chorus, which was solved in a matter of seconds by friend and kindred musical spirit Jerry Chapman. Always good to have good musicians to bounce ideas off of.

Lifeline marks the first time I’ve attempted to play electric guitar on a recorded track. I’ve only played acoustic ever since Santa gave me the shaft at 13 when I didn’t get the axe and amp I’d been asking for. I felt so rock & roll strumming away on Doug’s Gibson in the studio. The song materialized quite naturally and quickly, and we even threw some horns in the mix at the end.
