about
I wrote this song a lifetime ago in the basement of a run-down rec center gymnasium in Princeville, NC. The previous fall, the eastern part of our state was devastated by horrible floods. Princeville was among the worst hit – nearly the entire town submerged in 8-10 feet of muddy water. That following summer, 40+ youth and adults from the church I served as associate pastor arrived to rebuild the house of an elderly African-American gentleman, from the ground up. On the night of our arrival, I somehow managed to find a quiet space away from everyone else to pen this song. I was thinking about all that might happen that week. It came pretty much all at once.
When it was time to record it 12 years later, I wanted to try my hand at recording with strings over the guitar riff. Providentially I'd recently been introduced by a good friend to the music of Jeremy Casella, a singer/songwriter/producer out of Nashville. I loved the way he worked strings in and out of his acoustic-based songs. Jeremy would not only arrange the parts but also had connections with some pretty big-time Nashville session players. The sound I was hearing in my head would later be the sound I heard coming out of the speakers.
Jeremy shot the files to Doug’s studio in Winston-Salem so we could record my vocals. But Doug was not satisfied. "Let’s throw some banjo in the mix," he said rather spontaneously. He didn’t think I’d go for it. I thought it was brilliant. We got a hold of a college student from my church who possesses a tremendous musical gift. Evoke Sufjan Stevens, we challenged him. He more than delivered.
lyrics
He says this is the beginning
This is where we stand
Captivated by a world that waits on helping hands
And what we hold dear is here to stay and remain
He says this is now the place
From where we will learn to capture and hold grace
To give and to discern
And from here we slumber and then awake
He says this is now the time
To hold your neighbor’s hand
To search for the rhymes and the reasons of this land
And all of this is certain to lift your spirits within
I am one, I am peace
I am love, full of grace
If you let me in, into your soul
I’ll fill your heart with something more
He says this is where you are
You gotta seize the space before you – you’ve traveled so far
Let the spirit touch you
And feel this love embrace you
And feel this love embrace you
And feel this love embrace you, right now
And feel this love embrace you
He says this is the beginning
